Start Here

Most guitar teachers spend a lot of time on theory and technique and then eventually you get to play some songs - if you don't get bored and give up! At Tony's Guitar Lessons we do things differently. My objective is to get you playing songs as soon as possible, and that means learning chords from Day One.

Here's what I teach and roughly the order I teach it in:
  • Some basic chords so you can strum a few simple rock and pop songs
  • Build on those chords and add barre chords with more songs
  • Start reading tab so you can play solos and licks
  • Add fingerstyle
  • Introduce theory: how chords are made, where they are on the fretboard
  • Keep getting better and better!

And all in the comfort and convenience of your own home. I live in Sunnyvale, CA and I drive to you, within a radius of about 10 miles.

So if you live in the area, why not give me a call and let's discuss guitar lessons for you or your children.

Great Guitar Lesson Packages

I've checked out a few of the lesson packages around, and I like these the best:

Learn Guitar with Jamorama
Using a combination of video lessons, play along jam tracks and software games to speed your learning, Jamorama has been put together by a professional musician. Also includes a bunch of extras in the package.

Learn Acoustic Guitar with Jamorama
Same as above, except with the emphasis on acoustic guitar.

Your first song! House of the Rising Sun.

The first song I start my new students off with is House of The Rising Sun. The majority of people have heard of it - even the younger ones - and it immediately introduces 5 or 6 of the most common chords.

It's a traditional American folk song and was popularized in the 1960's by The Animals, making it to number one on both sides of the Atlantic in 1964.

For the beginner, the hardest chord here is the F chord. This requires you to bar your index finger across both the first and second strings. F is probably the hardest chord you'll need to learn for quite a while, and it's used a lot so you may as well start working on it now!

Here are the chords:

House of the Rising Sun

Intro: Am C D F Am E Am E7

Am C D F
There is a house in New Orleans,
Am C E E7
They call the "Rising Sun",
Am C D F
It's been the ruin of many a poor boy
Am E Am E7
And God, I know, I'm one.

My mother was a tailor,
She sewed my new blue jeans,
My father was a gambling man,
Down in New Orleans.

Now the only things a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's all a-drunk

Oh, mother, tell your children
Not to do what I have done -
Spend your lives in sin and misery
In the House of Rising Sun.
